about us

Young Gourmet aims to be a resource about food used by teenagers as they move from child to adult. By showing the integral part food plays in all our lives, we intend to help you make independent, informed choices. We think:

    • as teenagers, you are competent and capable of taking charge of what you eat

    • teenagers can be effective in the kitchen and create more than just muffins or biscuits on their own without hurting themselves or making a mess (well not such a big mess)

    • the media and cooking literature tends to focus on ‘cooking with kids’ or ‘cooking with mum’ which can appear patronising to someone who is nearing adulthood

    • we never assume that you prefer eating a burnt sausage in white bread whilst the adults eat "adult food" (but we do respect your right to eat what you think tastes good)

    • little time is dedicated in the middle school curriculum to growing, cooking and eating food or life-skills like how to budget and buy good food

    • we think you do want to broaden your knowledge about food and so you are interested in food in literature, food in art, food in history, food in anthropology, food in science, food as medicine or food culture

    • there seems to be an anecdotal shift in teenage attitudes about food - it is now ok to cook and ok to eat food that is good for you, which is why we love retail food outlets that sell 'real' food with lots of choices, that you can see being prepared in front of you

    • food tourism initiatives fail to provide for teenagers as a legitimate market

    • teenagers are over being told they are obese and get turned off by the emphasis on eating ‘nutrition’ rather than the enjoyment of eating ‘real good food’

So, if you are a teenager who is interested in food, where food comes from, how food is made, and lots more. Then Young Gourmet will answer your questions, encourage you to cook, hear what you say and publish your recipes, advice and opinions!
