National

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is the independent statutory authority which administers the Trade Practices Act and the Prices Surveillance Act. The ACCC has a network of offices in all capital cities to handle public complaints and inquiries. Staff can provide guidance to business and consumers on their rights and obligations under the law, but not legal advice. The ACCC seeks to improve competition and efficiency in food markets, foster adherence to fair trading, promote competitive pricing and restrain price rises in markets where competition is less than effective. www.accc.gov.au

Biotechnology Australia reports to a Council of five Australian Government ministers and operates from within the Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources; Health and Ageing; Environment and Heritage; Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry; and Education, Science and Training. BA works closely with partner agencies and stakeholders to develop a public awareness program that provides balanced and factual information on biotechnology and gene technology, including genetically modified foods and crops. www.biotechnology.gov.au

Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry The Food and Agriculture Division of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) has the dual role of providing customer services to the agricultural, food, fisheries and forest industries, and addressing the challenges of natural resource management. The Food Group within the DAFF delivers policy advice, programs and services to facilitate food and agribusiness industry development and helps deal with the challenges affecting those industries. www.affa.gov.au

Food Standards Australia New Zealand is an independent statutory authority that develops food standards which apply to all food products for sale in Australia and New Zealand. FSANZ's primary role is to protect the health and safety of the people of Australia and New Zealand by maintaining a safe food supply. www.foodstandards.gov.au

State

New South Wales

Safe Food Production NSW is a State Government agency responsible for food safety in the NSW primary produce and seafood industries. A Safe Food Production NSW Advisory Committee provides expert advice to Safe Food on a range of matters. Safe Food's mission is to protect consumers by developing scientifically robust food safety systems and ensuring their effective adoption by the NSW Food Industry. www.safefood.nsw.gov.au

Victoria

Dairy Food Safety Victoria provides information and handles complaints relating to any dairy product manufacturers, including ice cream, dairies and dairy product wholesalers. www.dairysafe.vic.gov.au

The Victorian Department of Human Services is responsible for the administration of the Victorian Food Act and food safety regulations in the State. The Food Safety Unit, a section in the Public Health Group, informs and educates business and the community about food safety, registers Food Safety Program Templates and Food Safety Auditors, and is involved in the food recalls, investigation of food borne illness and monitoring of food safety developments. www.foodsafety.vic.gov.au

Primesafe has responsibility for the supervision of food safety management for all red meat and chicken meat activities in Victoria, including abattoir, boning rooms, small goods production, retail and wholesale meat preparation and meat transport. Tel: 03 9685 7333

Queensland

Meat Safe, an initiative of Safe Food Queensland and the Australian Meat Processor Corporation, is a web site designed to help meat inspection and QA personnel employed at abattoirs and country meat works keep up to date with the latest information in their fields. www.meatsafe.qld.gov.au

Safe Food Production Queensland is a Queensland Government statutory authority that oversees food safety schemes for primary production. It works to ensure Queensland's food production systems meet national food safety standards and affirm consumer confidence in Queensland produce. www.safefood.qld.gov.au

Western Australia

The Public Health Division of the Health Department is responsible for the West Australian food monitoring program; food-related infectious disease surveillance; the food hygiene program; legislation review, monitoring and education, and label assessment food safety promotion. www.population.health.wa.gov.au

South Australia

Department of Human Services Food Section has overall responsibility for the administration and enforcement of legislation designed to protect the safety of food in South Australia. www.dhs.sa.gov.au/pehs/food-index.htm

Tasmania

Department of Health and Human Services The safety and quality of food is regulated and monitored by the Department of Health and Human Services' State Food and Environmental Health officers in conjunction with local councils. Local council Environmental Health Officers enforce food legislation and deal directly with food businesses. www.dhhs.tas.gov.au/services/publichealth

Australian Capital Territory

ACT Health provides a rapid response to incidents affecting public health, as well as a comprehensive public health advisory and regulatory service within the ACT. The Service provides advice and investigation of complaints regarding food. Northern Territory

Department of Health and Community Services administers the FoodSafe program. FoodSafe aims to raise food safety standards. The FoodSafe sticker and certificate are awarded to premises where all staff have at least basic food handler training and where FoodSafe practices are maintained to the satisfaction of the Environmental Health Officer. If standards fall, the sticker and certificate are removed. www.health.nt.gov.au
